Two Chances to Meet COPINH Coordinator in Chicago
(Español aquí) After Berta Cáceres was killed in March, Tomás Gómez Membreño filled her role as General Coordinator of COPINH, the Lenca organization in Honduras that Berta co-founded and whose work against illegal hydro-electric projects cost Berta her life. CRLN's 2014 Luncheon speaker, Karla Lara, sang to us about the Gualcarque river, which Berta died defending and which Tomás and COPINH continue to defend. Many say that CRLN's 2011 Luncheon speaker & Honduran social movement leader, Miriam Miranda, is the next target. Next week, Wednesday, June 8th, Tomás Gómez Membreño will be in Chicago.

After the press conference, we'll deliver a letter delivery to Senator Durbin's office asking that he use his power as a ranking Democrat on key Appropriations subcommittees to hold all security aid to Honduras immediately. Our Senator, Dick Durbin, has immense power over the flow of U.S. security aid to Honduras and needs to know that the faith community and people of conscience throughout Illinois are united in our demand that our taxes no longer fund Honduran police and military whose weapons are routinely used against the Honduran people.
Then in the evening, La Voz de Los de Abajo and CRLN will be hosting Tomás for a community conversation around the struggle in Honduras and ongoing solidarity work. The Lenca people continue to struggle for their land, water and autonomy while the continuing demands for truth and justice in the investigation of Berta's assassination.
