CRLN Friend and Colombian Human Rights Champion in Chicago!
The Journey of Accompaniment: A Look at the Human Rights Reality in Colombia
Abilio Pena Buendia
is a Colombian theologian and member of the Colombian Interecclesial
Justice and Peace Comission, a human rights organization that
accompanies the victims of human rights violations in 14 regions of
Colombia in their efforts to defend life and territory.
In April 2008 he was named Executive Secretary of the Internacional
Christian Service in Solidarity with Latin America "Oscar Romero"
(SICSAL), a network composed of church and human rights organizations
and persons from four continents.
On account of their work in defense of human rights, members of the
Justice and Peace Comission - including Abilio Pena - have been the
subject of false accusations by the Colombian security forces and multinational
corporations with economic interests in the Afro-Colombian
and indigenous territories. Recently, Danilio Rueda and Abilio Pena were
targetted to be detained and disappeared when one of the persons
accompanying the Afro-Colombian community of Curvarado was
kidnapped and held for one hour.
