This year\, we have faced profound challenges across the globe. From homes to hospitals to cities and towns\, the current health crisis and calls for racial justice have touched us all\, but they also made more apparent the flaws of our societies. However\, it is now that we must remember that we are a people of justice united by a common thread of hope. It is hope that unites us in our calls and emails to elected officials\, in our protests on the streets. It is hope that connects us to our brothers and sisters in their struggles thousands of miles away. It is hope that connects us to neighbors in solidarity when we struggle. Our keynote speaker Sr. Maria Magdalena embodies this hope and reflects what CRLN’s friends\, members and allies strive to live out every day. It is this hope that brings us together to commemorate another year of work for justice and to push toward the next.\n\n\n\n \nResponding to the Causes and Challenges of Forced Migration  \nSister María Magdalena Silva Rentería – Originally from Zacatecas\, she moved to Mexico City in 1982 to join the Josefina Sisters. During the earthquake in Mexico in 1985\, she coordinated the shelters for affected people. She is a member of the national team of the Human Mobility Pastoral of the Mexican Episcopal Conference. Currently\, she is the Director of CAFEMIN (House for Shelter\, Training and Empowerment of Migrant and Refugee Women)\, as well as the Coordinator of REDODEM (Network of Organizations Documenting and Defending Migrants). \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n2020 Honorees\nThe Sanctuary Working Group/ Chicago & the Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. Memorial Center/ Havana \n\n\n\n\nMusic by Rebel Diaz\nWe are Rebel Diaz. Somos hermanos- RodStarz and G1- who grew up in Chicago and came up in The South Bronx. Somos hijos de political refugees from Chile who fled a CIA-funded dictatorship in the 1970s. Revolution raised us\, and the culture of Hip-Hop provided us our own Nueva Cancion. We’ve been doing rebel rap since the Clinton era\, sharing our story and those of our people; el barrio\, the hood\, the poor\, los inmigrantes. Our bilingual sound has been shaped by pieces of South American folk\, house\, and latin percussion gettin down with boom-bap breaks and 808s. Hip-Hop and a vision for liberation have taken us around the world. With DJ Illanoiz and our band\, we’ve rocked stages in front of thousands at festivals\, and in front of dozens in squat house living rooms. We learned about tomas in our international tours\, then came back to The Bronx\, took over an abandoned building and started a community center\, The RDACBX. We’ve given lectures at Ivy League schools but are college dropouts. We went from rapping about being ‘periodistas de la esquina’ to actually hosting a television news program on the global network Telesur English. We’ve been blessed to open for the likes of Public Enemy\, Calle 13\, and Rage Against the Machine. The New York Times\, Washington Post\, and NPR among others\, have featured our work and words. Educators across the world use our music and videos as learning tools. Today\, we continue in la lucha with our families and in our community through our music and multimedia work.

Find those people who are committed to changing our scary reality. Human sunrises are happening all over the earth\, at every moment. People gathering\, people working to change the intolerable\, people coming in their robes and sandals or in their rags and bare feet\, and they are singing\, or not\, and they are chanting\, or not. But they are working to bring peace\, light\, compassion to the infinitely frightening downhill slide of human life.”  (Alice Walker\, Naropa University\, 2007) \n  \nIn these challenging times\, when all around us we see injustice\, violence\, lies\, and despair\, it is important to remember and claim that “another world is possible!” And not only is it possible\, but it is being created and nurtured by all of those working together to build a world of justice\, compassion\, truth\, and hope! \n  \nCRLN has created the responsive reading for the 4th station\, “Helped in the Struggle.”  \n  \nIn light of the coronavirus pandemic\, the “walk” part of Good Friday Walk for Justice is cancelled. \n  \nHOWEVER\, even though we cannot gather right now\, WE CAN STILL PRAY and take courageous action for justice in our communities!  We will honor this 40th Anniversary Good Friday Walk for Justice by publishing our Prayer Booklet online.  We encourage you to pray this modern-day Way-of-the-Cross on Good Friday in the safety of your homes with members of your households.  The booklet will be available at walkforjusticechicago.com by Monday\, April 6. The Planning Committee and Station Coordinators will record an audio/visual performance of the responsive readings and have it available for download at the website or link to it from the website as well. SUMMARY:Reimagining Diversity and Inclusion via Epistemologies of the South
DESCRIPTION:A dynamic\, arts-based workshop that will involve participants in a collective exploration of the conflicts we face surrounding epistemological diversity and inclusion in higher education. Discuss approaches to decolonizing knowledge and learn strategies to address different epistemologies. This workshop will be facilitated by Fany Aguinda\, an indigenous Kichwa youth leader from Tzawata\, Ecuador and Chelsea Viteri\, a mestiza educator-facilitator-artist from Quito\, Ecuador. Fany and Chelsea are members of the Pachaysana Institute\, a collective of Ecuadorian and international educators\, teaching artists\, development specialists and community organizers who seek to bridge the divide between community development and international development\, as well as between local and global education. \nUniversity education is shaped and guided by western epistemologies. Clearly\, this eurocentric approach to knowledge has made innumerable contributions to contemporary life. Nevertheless\, it goes without saying that non-western epistemologies and ontologies have been excluded — even obliterated — in its name. Bonaventura de Sousa Santos refers to these alternative ways of thinking as “Epistemologies of the South\,” and the acts against their inclusion as epistemicide — an integral part of an ongoing colonial project of domination over territory\, resources and human bodies. For most of us\, epistemicide is a subtle but violent act and one that we never perceived during our education. However\, it has resulted in collective biases related to how we define what is legitimate knowledge and who can be viewed as a legitimate knower. Our views are often limited to a western legacy\, which is tied to colonial and patriarchal violence. Even in projects with the best of intentions\, this limited epistemological framework often results in work that is extractive and exploitative of communities\, yielding scarce benefits to those outside of the ivory tower. DESCRIPTION:To attend\, you must register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bringing-hope-to-the-nearly-forgotten-migrant-detainees-in-the-deep-south-tickets-69904011781 \nCRLN  invites you to a free program with noted immigration attorney Marty Rosenbluth\, who will speak about his work providing legal counsel to undocumented migrants and asylum seekers held in one of the worst detention centers in the nation. Marty relocated to Lumpkin\, Georgia to be near his clients at the Stewart Detention Facility\, a private for-profit facility that has been criticized for its poor conditions\, resulting in several detainee deaths. There are now more than 56\,000 people in immigration detention in the US\, many held in inhumane conditions and without legal help. Marty’s extraordinary work and dedication has been showcased in a number of recent articles in prominent publications including The Guardian and the Christian Science Monitor\, and he wrote a recent op-ed in the Washington Post (links below). \nHe received his JD from the University of North Carolina School of Law and was also a Staff Attorney at the Southern Coalition for Social Justice. In 2016 he was among lawyers who provided free legal services to Syrian refugees. The\nthree will discuss the landscape of Cuban film production for emerging women filmmakers.\nSpecifically\, they will touch on the progress and pitfalls faced by women directors in Cuba’s\nmale dominated film industry and the current state of independent filmmaking on the island. \nDías de Diciembre (December Days) – Directed by Carla Valdés León\nBetween 1975 and 1991 more than 400\,000 Cuban soldiers and civilians were sent to\nAngola in support of the country’s left-wing government. Two thousand of them were\nkilled. December Days shows some of the ways in which the mission to Angola—a\nmassive solidarity effort from a small country—continues to touch the lives of ordinary Cubans. \nFrágil (Fragile) – Directed by Sheyla Pool\nA daughter\, dedicated to the care of her mother with Alzheimer’s\, wants to feel her love\,\neven if it’s just one last time. A committee of people have been meeting with former 8th Day staff to plan the 2019 Good Friday Walk for Justice around the theme of Justice: Truth in Action. \nWe live in a post-truth culture\, where “alternative facts” replace actual facts and polarizing judgments have more weight than straightforward evidence.  In our post-truth world\, it is not that the truth\, science and facts have ceased to exist but that they are so easily dismissed. \nAs Martin Luther King\, Jr. once proclaimed\, “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality.
